Industrial Cadets

The Industrial Cadets programme has been created to give young people an insight into industry and manufacturing and to raise awareness of local career opportunities.

Royal inspiration

In May 2010 HRH The Prince of Wales visited Tata Steel in Teeside. During the visit he said he’d like to see manufacturing companies doing more to engage with young people, to raise awareness of industry and job opportunities. Tata Steel was inspired to take action and decided to launch a pilot project to engage with local schools in Redcar. The name ‘Industrial Cadets’ was proposed by The Prince of Wales.

Industrial Cadets at Steelite International

We launched our first Industrial Cadets programme with 12 students from The Co-operative Academy of Stoke-on-Trent and Haywood Academy (6 from each) in January 2013. We are due to commence our second programme in April 2014.

Our project called 'Art On A Plate' was designed for the students to understand creativity in the city, understand the importance of design in the manufacturing process and understand healthy eating with the overall aim of designing a piece of artwork fitting for the outside wall of the Human Resources building for all our visitors to see when entering the site.

This year we’ll be looking at ‘Back To The Future’, a project with the objective of designing artwork fit for the Distribution warehouse wall which is adjacent to the canal, for all visitors to the canal to witness.
